Make Your Shirts Perform

Performance T-Shirts & Sportswear Are Preferred

There is no doubt that performance fabrics are here to stay. Their popularity greatly increased a decade ago, but not everybody jumped in. Most consumers resisted mainly because of the higher cost initially and the unfamiliarity. But the fabric has evolved and is immensely popular for use as everything from running shirts to uniforms. We have seen the continued growth over the years and it's undeniable. For instance, participant t-shirts for running events used to be ordered as 100% cotton or 50/50 blend in nearly every case. But in 2016, we are seeing custom t-shirt orders for running events lean towards performance fabrics, with 70% of the orders being 100% polyester.

What is Performance Fabric?

In nearly every case for customized apparel, your performance fabric will be made of 100% polyester. The fabrics are engineered to provide maximum comfort and protection for active and excessive use. Fabrics are knitted in a variety of thicknesses, with an emphasis on breathability, stretchability and moisture wicking properties.

Moisture-wicking fabrics are made to move moisture away from the body to the fabric surface where it can evaporate quickly. Drywicking is a new variation that improves evaporation even more by using a smart two-tiered fabric with the outer layer being a natural fabric, which is more absorbent, drawing moisture away from the body for greater evaporation, leaving the skin dry.

Thermal properties are also a major factor, with fabrics having a wider range of comfort through temperature fluctuations - staying cooler in the heat and warmer in the cold. Additionally, performance fabrics are treated with a number of coatings, the most common being anti-microbial, anti-odor, wrinkle resistance, stain resistance and UV blocking.

What Performance Products Can You Customize?

Activewear of every type is available in performance fabrics, with new styles entering the market every year. All of these performance apparel products can be customized with screen-printing or embroidery. Performance fabrics are a natural for sports apparel, but are also extremely popular for use as company uniforms.

Crazy List of Guinness World Record for Most T-Shirts Worn at One Time

I don't know what you think, but this is hilarious. Think about wearing 150 or even 250 T-Shirts all at one time. I have to think this feat would be suffocating. It's definitely not for the claustrophobic. Here is a list of record holders as best we could compile at the moment. We were quite surprised at how many times this record has been broken in recent years. Note: Some of the dates don't make sense, so we listed in order of number of shirts worn.

Newest Guinness World Record Holder - December 2011 - 257 T-Shirts

The most T-shirts worn at once is 257 and was achieved by Sanath Bandara (Sri Lanka) in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on December 22nd, 2011. The record was attempted on stage in front of a crowd of people in a public park in Colombo. Sanath was victim of the 2008 Weliveriya bombing in Sri Lanka and has attempted to break Guinness World Record ever since.  It took him 1 hour, 7 minutes and 3 seconds to get to 257.

Guinness World Record Holder - May 2011 - 252 T-Shirts

Hwang Kwang-hee (Hangul: 황광희; Hanja: 黃光熙;[1] born on August 25, 1988), also known mononymously as Kwanghee, is a member of the nine-member South Korean boyband ZE:A managed by Star Empire Entertainment. They debuted on January 7, 2010 with the single Mazeltov.[2] Hwang is also well known for being a popular star in the variety show scene.[3]

On May 28, Hwang attended the "2011 Environment Day" event in Seoul, where he participated in a "clothes layering game" and shocked everyone by putting on 252 layers of t-shirts, earning him a Guinness World Record for the most T-shirts worn.

Guinness World Record Holder - January 2012 - 249 T-Shirts

Las Vegas, NV, USA -- Andy Coyne of Greenville managed to wear 249 T-shirts at one time, which weighed in at more than 200 pounds, at an industry trade show in Las Vegas - setting the new world record for the Most T-shirts worn at once, according to World Record Academy (www.worldrecordacademy.com).

Guinness World Record Holder - November 2011 - 247 T-Shirts

On November 11, 2011, Tom Rauen of Dubuque, Iowa USA at the Diamond Jo Casino, broke the World Record by wearing 247 T-Shirts at one-time. Tom Rauen trained for months to prepare for what he expected might take 2.5 hours or more. Although time has nothing to do with this record, Rauen’s team helped him put on shirt #247 after just an hour and forty-five minutes. The last shirt was a Size 20X, and was large enough to cover a queen- sized mattress. Three past world record holders in this category have been from the USA.

Guinness World Record Holder -  May 2010 - 245 T-Shirts

In Croatia, Kruno Budiselic managed to put on 245 T-shirts ranging in size from M to XL in less then two hours - setting the new world record for the Most T-Shirts Worn at One Time.  In total Budiselic put on around 68 kilos with T-shirts ranging in size from M to XL in less then two hours.
At one point he warned judges he thought he might have to quit when he felt he was being throttled by the neckbands. At the end of the competition the Croat told Novi list daily he felt a crisis coming somewhere around the 120th T-shirt, and now feels a slight pain in his neck.

Guinness World Record Holder - September 2008 - 237 T-Shirts

On September 19th, 2008, Swedish T-Shirt Store breaks the previous Guinness World Record for most T-shirts Worn at One Time by wearing 237 T-Shirts.

Guinness World Record Holder -  September 2006 - 155 T-Shirts

Previously the record was set live on The Early Show by Matt McAllister on September 15th, 2006. He donned 155 screen printed t-shirts in 4 hours, sizes Small through 10XL, adding 100 pounds.
We found this unbelievable and have shared it in the past at the TerrificT Facebook page.

Don't Buy Custom T-Shirts Online

So why shouldn't you buy custom t-shirts online? That's simple - because you don't have to. For many folks, ordering online is just not an easy process. Furthermore, there is always the issue of TRUST. Just how do you know who you are dealing with when thousands of screen-printers are littering the Google searches with the "Best Deal on Custom T-Shirts".

If you are searching online for screen printers or embroiders to produce your custom t-shirts, polos, jackets or other apparel, then chances are that you either got let down by your local t-shirt shop or you are looking for lower prices. Both reasons have merit.

So where am I going with this? We'll, even though we here at www.TerrificT.com have knocked ourselves out for years building excellent online tools for ordering custom t-shirts and apparel online, we still process most of our orders the old fashion way. We get a phone call or an email, often a referral, requesting quotes and orders. Most screen printers do this everyday.

The Point Is This

The Internet is still an excellent tool to find new or better sources for custom screen-print or embroidered apparel. They don't even need to be local necessarily. Many excellent t-shirt providers, and yes TerrifcT is one of them, have large production facilities in multiple locations across the country to facilitate shorter delivery times and lower (if not free) shipping costs.

Start Your Search

So if clicking product menus and uploading artwork just isn't your cup of tea, use the Internet to research screen printers and narrow your selection down to 3. You want to look at Reviews, Content, and Price.

Tip: Don't look on just the first page of your Google search. Many extremely competent screen printers and embroiders will be buried deep, say 10-50 pages back.

This has nothing to do with their t-shirt printing skill, but is rather a matter of time & resources - screen printers who have had a strong Internet presence for many years, will naturally dominate the first 10 pages of your Internet Google, Bing, or Yahoo search.

Now send them an email and request a quote. Then ask them to call you for assistance. This will give you a good idea of how the operation runs. Beyond that, look for samples of their screen-printing or embroidery work on their websites. Also, read some of the reviews or testimonials - are they independently verified?

Do you make several custom garment purchases throughout the year for your business, club or organization? If so, perhaps you should try sending a small test order to your favorite candidate.

Bottom Line

You can find Excellent Screen Printing & Embroidery providers online and let them do the work of placing the order for you. Just call or email them. The good ones, will still make it easy for you.

TerrificT Custom T-Shirt Testimonials
Megan D. says : I initially chose TerrificT because they had so many shirt choices available for for single item printing. When the shirt I chose wasn't available, they contacted me immediately with some alternative choices. They even contacted the mill that makes one of the shirts to verify that the measurements were accurate. I bit my nails until the shirt arrived and...YES! The shirt is perfect and I can't tell you how much I appreciate the attention to everything along the way. I will definitely be buying all my custom shirts here from now on.

Why Better Screens Make Better T-Shirts

Screen Exposure Test ReviewMr. Terrific Knows Custom T-ShirtsCloseup of Screen Print Exposure Test Review
Evaluating Completed Screen Exposure Test
Say, what's this guy doing you might ask?

We'll, that guy is Felipe and he is one of TerrificT's resident screen-print guru's.

What Felipe is doing is reviewing a Screen Exposure Test with what we printers call a 'Loop', which magnifies small details such as halftone dots.

You see, being at the top of your game as a Custom T-shirt & Apparel Screen-Printer is not a matter of just slapping ink on a shirt.

To be the best, you MUST constantly set time aside for research and development, as well as, monitoring your screen and print standards to ensure you are within your acceptable production tolerances. I don't know what it is about screen printers in general, but dang I wish more took quality seriously. Unfortunately, the unwary t-shirt buyer only sees price much of the time until it is too late.

Why Your Screen Printer Should Use A Screen Exposure Calculator

Screen exposure tests matter, yet many screen printers don't bother to do them. An exposure test is done to determine the proper amount of exposure time for making screens. A test film positive, aka exposure calculator,  is used to create a multiple step exposure of a detailed test image (basically a step-wedge test). For example, a test pattern of varying line weights and halftone dots will be repeated 10 times on one piece of artwork. A tinted filter is placed over this test image with an increasingly darker tint on each repeated test image. After making one screen with the test image, you effectively have the same image repeated 10 times, but each exposed with a different amount of light . Each exposure step represents a factor of the test exposure time. The results are analyzed for edge definition, detail and complete exposure.  The best result determines the optimum exposure time.

Illustration: 10 Step Exposure Test Image
Illustration: 10 Step Exposure Test Image

An exposure test is needed to ensure that a screen will print the best detail possible. If a screen is underexposed, detail will be blown out, often seen as blurry edges or white underbases 'creeping' because they are not fully trapped by overprinting ink colors - underexposed screens allow too much ink. Underexposure will also cause screens to breakdown in production, producing unwanted dots in the imprint area (pinholes) and likely ruining screens in successive print jobs because ink will physically bond with the screen mesh and ,unbeknownst to less experienced printers,  block detail when the screens are used again on future print jobs.

If a screen is overexposed, there will be a loss of detail, especially noticeable with fine lines, small fonts, and halftones. For toned or 4-color process images, this dot loss will make images look washed out and often create unwanted moire patterns.

A screen-printer must perform exposure tests for all the different screen types they use. For instance, depending upon the print shop, several different mesh counts are used. In layman's terms, mesh count refers to how large the openings are of the screen mesh. Printers use  larger openings to print more ink and finer meshes to print detail.

Exposure tests are not a one-time event. Being a great screen printer is hard work. Several variables, such as, humidity, art quality (film density or dmax), exposure light degeneration and others, merit frequent tests. I recommend weekly tests, incorporated into the workflow, but monthly tests will suffice.

Bottom line: A screen printer cannot guess proper screen exposure times - exposure tests must be performed. Precisely exposed screens will always produce sharper, detailed images. Sure, you can produce bad prints with good screens if you don't know what you are doing, but that's putting the 'cart before the horse' - first you must start with excellent screens, then worry about good printing habits.
